Location

Puerto Banús is located 4 miles west of Marbella Centre. It sits between the famous Golden Mile on one side and the beach of San Pedro Alcántara on the other side. It covers a surface area of 15 hectares, including one of Europe's largest and best-known ports.

History and iconic sites

While Marbella Golden Mile was experiencing a spectacular boom as a tourist destination among the European high society, royals and celebrities, the businessman Jose Banús saw an opportunity to provide Marbella’s international set with an exclusive marina. Noldi Schreck, who had previously been hired to design the Marbella Club Hotel and participated in the design and construction of Beverly Hills, moved Jose Banús away from his original designs of spectacular skyscrapers to develop instead a glamorous marina with a feel of an Andalusian fishing village in a more traditional Mediterranean architectural style. In May 1970, the port facilities as well as apartments and service areas were officially opened in a lavish ceremony, attended by a host of celebrities including film director Roman Polanski, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, with Julio Iglesias singing to 1700 guests. Due to the success of the project, José Banús became the largest developer of residential tourism complexes on the Costa del Sol. The port took his name, and it soon grew beyond the two streets and the original harbour. It now has several tree-lined streets with a central ‘plaza’ or town square named after Malaga-born Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas. It has since become one of the largest entertainment centres in the Costa del Sol, with a port that houses some 900 boats, including several luxury super yachts belonging to the world’s wealthiest people, and with 5 million annual visitors.

Type of properties

Most of the properties in the area are luxury apartments and penthouses although some villas can also be found. Puerto Banús offers a beautiful coastline and sandy beach areas on both sides of the marina, where luxurious residential developments as well as villas are located. With frontline beach or further inland positions, they present a very exclusive, safe and quiet setting, tucked away from the vibrant vibes of the marina. The small area of the marina, on the other hand, offers bustling, waterfront, Andalusian-style apartments with balconies overlooking the iconic port.

Family living

While, indeed, Puerto Banús itself is better known as a popular nightlife destination, the area is also an outstanding location for family life. Many urbanisations are perfect for families, with premium security, lush gardens and communal pools. There are also plenty of recreational opportunities with calm and sandy beaches; a promenade to walk around, ride a bike, or rent a Segway; and a movie theatre with an international programme that includes films in their original version. Not to mention the proximity to many prestigious schools.
